Does KIDS SPEED TRAINING have any real benefits!

I am often asked whether there is any benefit to kids doing speed drills and training for speed at a relatively young age. The answer is a definite

YES

Unfortunately many young athletes are presented later in their development when the flaws in their techniques are leading to obvious problems with their running styles, overuse/muscle injuries or failing to perform at the expected level. It is more difficult for these athletes to unlearn their existing styles and relearn a new style. It is vital for development that the kids learn the correct techniques at a younger age then build their strength and natural development on these solid foundations.


I recommend that young athletes learn basic techniques along with coordination drills at the ages of 8-11 years of age and use these foundations to develop to their maximum potential.We focus on basic mechanics,core stability and strength se pictures below -the main theme is exercise while having fun.We aim to make all our sessions fun-ctional


The priority is for parents to find a suitably qualified young athletes coach (preferably IYCA qualified) –not just a parent who used to do a bit of sprinting as this is a recipe for disaster.

The priority as a coach is to develop for the longer term these young individuals using techniques which will develop their potential for all types of sport before the sport specific training takes over in later years. The focus is on technique and coordination drills in a fun environment. As a coach we have a massive responsibility to ensure we repay the trust the parents and children place in us by ensuring we keep ourselves informed on all aspect of training young children as recent work has shown that many of the practices used in previous years may have hampered rather than aided development.
