SEVEN SPEED SECRETS TO IMPROVING YOUR PERFORMANCE
My experience of training young players for speed has allowed me to compile seven SPEED SECRETS for improving YOUR PERFORMANCE ON THE FIELD. I have outlined these tips below please use the other resources on this site to look into each in more detail.
1. THE TRAIN-4-SPEED SPEED EQUATION
Better technique + Improved strength = Increased speed
This equation applies for all age groups but particularly young players speed can be increased by working on one of the components but the best results come for improving both.
Better technique- will allow a more efficient running style with the benefit of INCREASED FORCE INTO THE GROUND and less wasted energy. The key for this improved technique is to accomplish it early enough to allow full speed development .In my experience once players get to 14-15 years old it becomes more and more difficult to change running techniques. The age of speed technique acquisition is much earlier than parents and coaches realise -------------- 7-11 YEARS
Improved strength-Players will get faster naturally as they mature through adolescence and physical changes as they develop towards adulthood. Hence all young players do get faster anyway.
All ages can improve their strength further with suitable exercise programs. The key is SELECTING THE APPROPRIATE EXERCISES FOR THE PLAYERS AGE AND ABILITY. These exercises must be effective and safe.
A good speed program for young players MUST incorporate technique and strength training to maximise a player’s potential speed.
